UP Train Soundproofing Update
In March, the Village in partnership with Metra Rail Service, launched a pilot program to mitigate sound noise from rail and train cars on the Union Pacific West Line. The material used along the newly installed fence will help reduce the noise from the rail cars. The installation of the noise mitigation fencing was due in large part by working together with our residents along Lake street closest to the rail tracks. Senator Kimberly Lightford and Representative Chris Welch advocated with key Metra and Union Pacific executives on our behalf. Metra agreed to fund this pilot program which cost just over $50,000.
We now know how this pilot program has affected residents so far. The Village sent out a questionnaire to residents, with slightly less than 50% of respondents reporting that the soundproofing materials provided at least 25% or more sound reduction. And, slightly less than 50% of respondents reported that the materials reduce the noise less than 25% or not at all. The Village will continue to work with Metra, Union Pacific, and legislative leaders to find solutions for those residents affected by the UP-rail extension.
