Chicago Avenue between Thatcher Avenue and First Avenue has been closed to all traffic and barrier walls have been installed. Please use alternative routes until further notice.

There is a flash flood warning in place as heavy rains are expected to fall tonight. Motorists are reminded to be alert, obey all traffic signals, and use caution before proceeding through areas that may contain high standing water such as a viaduct. If possible, these areas should be avoided.

The National Weather Service has updated its projections for the DesPlaines River and has factored in both the existing river depth height and projected rainfalls. The current projection is that the river will crest slightly above 17 feet by Sunday night. If necessary the Village will continue to activate additional flood protection

Chicago Avenue closed from Thatcher Avenue to First Avenue

Due to the current water levels of the Des Plaines River and future weather predictions, the Village of River Forest has activated its Flood Protection Plan. At this time, Village officials will be closing Chicago Avenue from Thatcher Avenue to First Avenue to all traffic and constructing a flood wall as a precautionary measure. This will help to protect the Village against the uncertainty of predicted weather. Please be alert and obey traffic signals at all times. The Village will continue to provide updates as the situation develops.

Given the weather today and additional rain in the forecast, the Village of River Forest continues to monitor Des Plaines River water levels. Current projections do not show an immediate threat to the Village. However, if heavy rainfall continues those predictions may change. The Village remains prepared to activate its Flood Plan if needed. Please be alert and obey traffic signals at all times. The Village will continue to provide updates as needed.

The Village of River Forest continues to monitor Des Plaines River water levels and the latest model predicts that river may crest at a height of 16’ 3” sometime between Saturday, July 15 and Sunday, July 16.  If these predictions hold true it is anticipated that only Chicago Avenue would be closed to traffic until water levels recede.  The Village remains prepared to activate its Flood Plan if needed.  Please be alert and obey traffic signals at all times.  The Village will continue to provide updates as the situation develops.

The Village of River Forest is continually monitoring the current and future weather forecasts and all available indicators for Des Plaines River water levels. Please be advised that the Village anticipates that all roadways will be open for morning rush-hour traffic on Thursday, July 13.  The Village is prepared to activate its Flood Plan if needed with road closures and flood barriers as warranted.  Please be alert and obey traffic enforcement at all times. The Village will continue to provide updates as the situation develops.
